NASA Studies Explore Benefits of Mental Health Gardening in Space

Gardening will play an important role in the long-term space mission in the future, offering healthy and fresh green source astronauts – and maybe other plant foods – while away from home. This may not be the only benefit that comes with gardening in space. As part of a new study, NASA explores whether these parks can also help astronauts deal with insulation of space life.

NASA has planted plants at international space stations for a while now, and the project has proven useful. Some astronauts have been able to eat harvested plants, and scientists have learned a little about how to grow leafy green in the micro-gravity environment.

That said, there are still a few studies to appear on the subject, and not all of his relationships by producing food. NASA said that currently studying whether the gardening in the room will have a profitable effect on the mental health of astronauts, especially whether it will help with the kind of unique isolation that comes by living in space.

This research was conducted by Dr. Kennedy Space Center Project Scientist Gioia Mass and its expert team, who received the project from the NASA Human Research Program. This effort involves a survey given to astronauts that grow plants at international space stations, one question involving which will help explain the impact of the activities of the astronauts.

This study is still ongoing at this time, with only seven of the 24 astronauts anticipated to complete the survey. However, some initial data is available, and it notes that all astronauts have seen the activity meaningful. Some astronauts prefer different activities, while others report preferences to foster plants and report free time that dedicates the project.
