Google reveals its vision of the future of video calls
With the need for high-quality video conferencing calls that have never happened because of a pandemic, Google has revealed the concept that imagined how the meeting could be displayed.
On Google I / O 2021, the company exhibits how new projects Starline experience creates a 3D view of people during video conference calls, all in the booth.
Using lots of technology including machine learning, spatial audio and real-time compression, the platform creates a 3D user model, which is projected to the screen – giving the impression to sit opposite your friend’s call.
What is the Starline Project
While only mentioned briefly on Google I / O 2021 Keynote, the Starline Project hopes to revolutionize how professionals communicate with other people through video calls. While only available in some Google offices for now, this technology requires a combination of special hardware and software to create the illusion of your colleague sitting opposite you, as if you were in the meeting room.
The experience is possible without further accessories from users – they just need to sit and wait for their colleagues to appear across to them
Clay Bavor, Google VP, provides further insight into Starline Project, detailing that the demo with company partners is currently underway, saying:
“We have also conducted a demonstration with selected company partners in fields such as health services and media to get initial feedback on technology and application. We are planning a deployment of experiments with company partners later this year.
“We are really excited about the progress we make with the Starline Project, and the potential of technology to solve important problems from wanting to be with someone even when you physically can’t.”
