Aluminum-ion batteries charge ten times faster than similar lithium-ion units
The company from Australia named Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG) has announced several interesting test results from aluminum-ion battery testing. This new type of rechargeable battery can charge ten times faster than the current lithium-ion unit. While charging significantly faster, the new type of battery also lasts longer and does not require a cooling system to operate.
The company has tested the coin cell prototype of aluminum batteries in front to deliver it to manufacturing partners and have revealed several performance figures. The battery offers a power density of around 7000 w / kg, which is a large amount that closes the power density provided by ultracapasitor capable of 12,000-14,000 w / kg.
The new type of battery has a 150-160-WH / kg energy density, which is around 60 percent of the energy-weight of the best lithium-ion battery available today. The spec means this battery is not suitable for electric vehicles at first glance. The higher the energy density, the further the EV can push per cost. Although it might come down on energy density compared to lithium-ion batteries, it has a significant advantage.
The battery can charge very quickly, with GMG saying that smart phones running aluminum-ion batteries can charge a full fee in one to five minutes. What that means if the aluminum battery is used in an electric vehicle is that it will only drive around 60 percent of the distance of the vehicle that is proportional to the lithium-ion battery, but the load speed may be very fast.
New battery technology is also more durable than lithium batteries in the life cycle, with the ability to undergo a load cycle and debit 2000 without setbacks in performance. Aluminum-ion batteries are also very safe, with very low potential to penetrate, and more recyclable than lithium batteries at the end of their lives. Perhaps the main benefit is that aluminum-ion batteries do not require any lithium, which can be a big problem considering most of the world’s lithium supply is in China.
Another important feature is because the battery is not too hot, they don’t need cooling equipment. The cooling system can be removed from electric vehicles and replaced with larger aluminum-ion batteries to give you the same energy density as lithium-ion in the same car.
